Concordia junior Gabbie Ewing, a 2015 Hawaii Prep graduate, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the year on Wednesday, becoming the school’s first player to receive the honor.
Ewing led the Cavaliers with eight goals, seven assists, and 23 points. She also had five game-winning goals.
She was a unanimous pick and was an All-GNAC second-team pick last season.
The Division II Cavaliers (14-2-1) are ranked 17th and finished the season on a 13-match unbeaten streak, including 11 wins in a row. Concordia claimed its first GNAC regular-season title.
Concordia hosts Northwest Nazarene (11-6) in the GNAC Tournament semifinals on Thursday. The match will be streamed live at gocugo.com.
Last month, Concordia beat Northwest Nazarene 1-0. Ewing scored the game-winner.
Kolten Wong meet and greet Friday
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong will make a homecoming appearance on Friday at Jamba Juice in the Prince Kuhio Plaza and sign autographs and take pictures from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Attendees will also be able to try in-store samples and win many prizes including free Jamba Juice for a year, a free 15-pack smoothie pack and more.
The 2008 Kamehameha graduate batted .285, his highest average in five seasons, with four homers and 42 RBIs with a .788 OPS, also his most productive, in 354 at-bats and 108 games.
BIIF hoops meeting for officials, coaches
A meeting for high school basketball officials and coaches is slated for 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Honokaa High School library.
On the agenda are the 2017-18 NFHS rules updates and points of emphasis. Veteran basketball official Mason Souza will be the presenter.

Waiakea looking for coaches
Waiakea High is accepting applications for the following coaching positions: Head coach for boys and girls track, 2017-18 season; head coach for football, 2018-19 season; head coach for boys and girls air riflery, 2018-19 season.
Applications can be picked up from the school’s main office during business hours. Head coaches are responsible to assemble their JV and Varsity coaching staff with the approval of the Waiakea administration. Head coaches are also responsible to organize and run an offseason training program.

UHH last at Wahine golf tourney
Mariah Paiste tied for 61st place and was UH-Hilo’s top finisher at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Wednesday at the Leilehua Golf Course.
She had a 34-over-par 87-82-81—250 total. Other Vulcan golfers were Dillyn Sakai, 65th, 93-84-92—269; Keely Kitamura, 66th, 89-93-91—273; Kiri Oshiri, 67th, Rachel Soans, 68th, 104-97-102—303.
UHH finished 12th among the 12-team field with a 1,067 total, 206 shots behind Ole Miss. Memphis’ Sydney Colwill took medalist honors with a 5-under 211 total.
The Vulcans were one of two Division II teams in the tournament. HPU was the other and placed 11th. UHH wrapped up its fall season and resume in February.
Saturday is senior day for UHH soccer
The UH-Hilo men’s soccer team (1-14, 1-11 PacWest) hosts Chaminade (3-8, 2-7-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kamehameha’s Paiea Stadium in its season finale.
Five Vulcan seniors will be honored after the match: Cassidy Dixon, Joshua Jasper, Evan Bacani, Kyran Johal, and Jake Sagami.
With a 3-0 win over Dominican on Saturday, the Vuls snapped a 26-match winless streak. Their last victory had been in overtime against Chaminade in 2016.
In the women’s match, UHH (6-9-1, 3-8-1) hosts Chaminade (3-10-1, 2-8-1) at 12:30 p.m. in a season finale.
The Vuls have six seniors: Jenna Hufford, Kayela Santiago, Milana Wolsleben, Astrid Perez, Sophie Satterlee, and Keani Shirai.
UHH free tennis clinic on Saturday
UHH will offer a free tennis clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the UHH tennis courts.
It is open to tennis players and adults of all ages. Registration is limited to the first 60 participants.

Waiakea graduate Calvin Mattos was told he’d be paid $3,000 a month by the Hawaii Hammerheads, “and that they would play in two leagues, one from November to April, then another they were told that would extend from June to September,” according to his father, Jason Mattos.
